Jamie Bishop Memorial Service: A Brief Report

On Thursday April 26th, 2007, a crowd of friends and relatives (I estimate approximately 400-600 people) gathered to pay their last respects to Jamie Bishop at the First United Methodist Church of Pine Mountain, Georgia.

In attendance and representing not only themselves but the massed good wishes and condolences of the SF/F/H community were myself, Deborah Newton, Brett Cox, Jeff and Ann VanderMeer, Michael Hutchins, and several other folks I neglected to speak to in the sad swirl of events.

The ceremony was lovely, intimate, and deeply touching. Insofar as any ritual can help alleviate the intense grief brought on by this shooting, this one did.

Mike and Jeri, supported by the presence of so many, are bearing up well, but are understandably exhausted. Their house is full of cards and flowers, but further missives would not go astray:

The Bishops
POB 646
Pine Mountain, GA 31822

A second, more local memorial fund has been started in Jamie's name:

Jamie Bishop Scholarship Fund in Graphic Arts
c/o LaGrange College
601 Broad Street
LaGrange, GA 30240
Designate the name of the fund on your check, should you wish to send a donation.

Memorial Fund

Thanks for the report on the memorial service. I'm glad so many were able to show up.
Thanks as well for the info on the memorial fund for Jamie Bishop. Your post implies that there is another one as well. Can you tell us where to find information on it?

anon Massachusetts

How's his widow? She's the one I fear for most: a foreigner now alone in this country (I'm assuming), with only a job and a house neither of which she might want to go back to. Is she ok?

Re: anon Massachusetts

Steffi Bishop was incredibly traumatized but also incredibly resilient. She got thru the memorial bravely. I expect to be in communication with her again soon. I doubt she knows her own plans herself at the moment.

Re: anon Massachusetts

I went to high school with Jamie and also attended the service. It was great to hear some of the stories about Jamie that I hadn't heard before. I know that this is going to be a long hard road for Steffi and the rest of Jamie's family. I know how to get in touch with Mike and Jeri but would like to know if you are aware of a way to get in touch with Stefi. I ask because I am on our class reunion committee and when we begin planning our next event, I am planning to begin taking donations for one of the scholarship funds and want to make sure to let Steffi know what we end up with. If you can email me with any helpful information, that would be GREAT! My email is austin_noahsmom@yahoo.com

Thank you,
Lori
