I was just wondering what happened to Geoff Murphy, the director of one of the best genre pictures ever, The Quiet Earth.   The answer:  nothing good.  He went on to direct a series of godawful pictures in Hollywood, amongst them Young Guns 2, Freejack, and. lastly, Fortress 2, the Christian Lambert vehicle, in 1999.  Thereafter he returned to New Zeeland and has since made a couple of indifferent features.  Another talent snuffed out by the studios.

In case you're unfamiliar with the Quiet Earth, I urge you to see it--netflix should have it, if your local video store does not.   The performance by outstanding NZ actor Bruno Lawrence is a tour de force, and the picture has a hell of an ending.
