The Assassination of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford

Another sad and all-too-familiar Hollywood Story. The much ballyhooed film translation of Ron Hansen's excellent novel, starring Brad Pitt and Casey Affleck, which disappeared from view after the completion of principal photography, is to be released after having reshoots and a new cut done by Brad Pitt and producer Ridley Scott. The director brought in to make the picture, New Zealander Andrew Dominik, the man responsible for the outstanding Australian picture, Chopper, turned in three hours plus of dark drama. light on the action, and Warner Brothers (again) was less than pleased. It's astonishing to me that this continues to happen with such regularity--you would think Hwood would have learned by now that they don't want this kind of movie and would assign these films to one of their hacks and leave foreign directors alone to continue making good movies. Anyway, my feeling is that you'd do well to give this one a pass and read Hansen's novel, one of the truly classic westerns.
