Talking ourselves to death

According to this article in today's Independent, we may be doing just that. I'm sure you've all read about the sudden and mysterious disappearance of bee colonies around the U.S. and Europe this year. The phenomenon has been branded Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD) or (my favorite) Vanishing Bee Syndrome (VBS), as if it's really just all in their tiny heads, and all that is necessary for a cure is a few trips to a shrink or perhaps some prozac in their pollen.

But the absence of bees is serious. As Einstein once succinctly summed up what he no doubt thought to be a purely hypothetical situation, "If the bee disappeared off the surface of the globe, then man would only have four years of life left. No more bees, no more pollination, no more plants, no more animals, no more man."

Suspicion has focused on such possible causes as parasites, pesticides, and genetically modified crops, but now some evidence has arisen that the culprit may be, yes, cell phones.

There's something all too fitting about the idea of humanity perishing simply . . . because . . . we . . . couldn't . . . shut . . . the . . . fuck . . . up.
