A theory . . .

I've been rereading some Iain M. Banks -- Consider Phlebas, The Player of Games, and Use of Weapons -- and in all these books, but the latter especially, both in content and style, I'm reminded of the mysterious, pseudonymous writer, K.J. Parker, author of, among other quasi-fantasies, The Company and The Engineer Trilogy.  The similarities are striking enough to make me wonder if Banks might have yet another outlet for his prolific pen.  But even if not, Parker -- whoever she (or he) may be -- has clearly read a lot of Banks and borrowed heavily.
