I have no doubt that a Thai, as the PC thesis states, can write more convincingly about Thailand that a non-Thai, but that doesn't mean that the non-Thai's insights bearing upon that country are unworthy or inessential. Should we declare anathema centuries of travel writing by Mark Twain and others in the name of political correctness? Were Grahame Green and Joseph Conrad shills for colonialism and should their work now be discarded. Are Baudrillard's and de Tocqueville's observations on the United States somehow illegitimate because they were French? Writing is opinion. Informed opinion and uninformed. Biased, fair-minded, wrong-headed, infantile, erudite...opinion in all its forms, with all its agendas. Without it, books would be bland and worthless.
If truth be told, I myself have been a victim of cultural appropriation for my entire life. My soul has been chafed by the hundreds upon hundreds of Yankee writers and filmmakers who, following a weekend in Biloxi or Panama City or Savannah, felt they had become so conversant with the Southland's innermost secrets, they were entitled to craft some abomination that wholly misconstrued the true sensitive nature of the region, thereby leaving Dixie once again exposed and pissed on and open to the vile depredations of every literary and cinematic carpetbagger who happens along. My people have and continue to be characterized as ignorant, deviant and inbred, and called names such as peckerwoods, hillbillies, and rednecks. True, many are inbred and deviant and ignorant, but hell, we have a sense of humor about that sort of thing (something most of the folks who blog about cultural appropriation could use a spot of). A little inappropriate cultural thievery don't make us no never mind. We've had to put up with George Wallace, Lester Maddox, and Jeb Bush for Christ's sake. All y'all had to deal with is folks like Blagoeivitch (who BTW) makes his debut on Celebrity Apprentice this Sunday).
Anyway, it's all bullshit. People from other cultures like to have stories written about them from other countries....as long as they're done with respect.
Here's the first footage from Predators. What you think? I'm kinda curious to see it without the Schwarzenegger factor.
I just finished reading Sensation by Nick Mamatas, which I highly recoomend. I think it'll be out pretty soon--I'll let you know/
