Okay, I play World of Warcraft with some friends of mine (we are proud members of the Church of the Subgenius guild!), but that would not be reason enough to post this news.
What has me excited is that the book will be written by Walt Simonson, whose work on Thor back in the 80s as writer and artist was a triumph of Kirbeyesque proportions. These groundbreaking (and planet-smashing) comics have been collected in graphic novel format and are well-worth checking out if you don't know them. Simonson infused Norse mythology into the Marvel universe with greater skill and panache than anyone before him. Here's the cover of issue 340, from Feb. 1984, for a good example of his dynamic style.
Simonson was at least as adept a writer as he was an artist, and his books feature tight but complex plots and sophisticated adult relationships and dialogue. If anyone can make the World of Warcraft comic more than just another tie-in product, it's Simonson. Regrettably, Simonson won't be doing the art himself: that chore falls to Ludo Lullabi and inker Sandra Hope, whose work I'm not familiar with. But clearly they have a lot to live up to. Here's hoping they rise to the challenge!
